Mystery Maps In My Garmin Zumo XT MyMaps

Post by Jim1348 »

I have a Garmin Zumo XT and it has a microSD card installed. When I checked the MyMaps folder on the Zumo XT, I have two maps that I don't recall downloading. They are named:

GUAM, HONOLULU, HAWAII, KAPAA, HAWAII, KAHULUI, HA

and DALLAS-FORT WORTH SOUTHEAST, TEXAS, TALLAHASSEE, F

I have checked the folders from both the internal memory and the memory card, but I can't locate them?

How can I determine where they are hiding so I can delete them?

I suspect that they are in a hidden folder somewhere, but I have not been able to find them, yet.

These will be maps sent by BaseCamp or similar. All map files on the device should either be in a folder named Map or in the hidden .system folder. If on a card then just do a search for .img files

Which OS do you use? If Windows you may be able to use JaVaWa's Device Manager program to locate and help remove them. Edit: only on the card as the XT can't be put into mass storage mode and Device Manager can't access MTP devices.

To see the hidden .system folder in Windows 10/11

1) Click on the Windows "Start" Button, then type in File Explorer Options in the search bar at the top and select it.

2) Click the View tab on the File Explorer screen.

3) Select "Show hidden files, folders, and drives"

4) Remove check mark for “Hide Empty Drives”

5) Remove check mark for “Hide protected operating system files” (Recommended)

6) To show hidden extensions for your files, remove the check mark from "Hide extensions for known file types".

7) After the check marks are removed, click "OK" to save the change.

@sussamb, can I change the names of the .img files in the internal Garmin Zumo memory?

You can but if they are Garmin maps put there by Express that is likely to cause issues when updates are due. Express when updating maps will only delete the old maps if they are named the same and in the same place that Express used.

Also, changing the filename will not change the name displayed in MyMaps. The map name is embedded in the map data. I've been able to change a map name with a JaVaWa tool, but it requires moving the map to a mass storage drive so that it can be accessed.
