XT hangs at "Calculating the route"

I just loaded a route for the first time after update the map on my XT. The XT attempts to calculate it but hangs after 99% displaying "Calculating the route". The XT eventually goes into standby mode with the route calculation never completing. I am curious what could cause this. The route is an old one that has been calculated by numerous map updates.

BTW, deleted the route and then imported it again off the SD card. That calculation took and extraordinarily long time but completed successfully.

No solution or explanation, but an observation. With the XT1, I would sometimes get a calculation that stalled.
I discovered that if I stopped it - backed out and then selected it again, it would start calculation again but speed through to about the percentage it reached before, and continue at 'normal' speed from there. I've seen this happen a few times, sometimes requiring 4 stages to complete.

I don't understand why this would be the case, but I can give myself a feasible answer with zero evidence: Memory.

I have often thought that the XT1 had a 'memory leak', ie routines requiring memory to perform a task claim it, but not releasing it after completion. After a while everything gets sluggish as it uses techniques to operate with a minimal amount of memory available.
