Vehicle symbol - simple but expressive red arrow wanted

Post by proofresistant »

Hello,

With the zumo XT or XT2 etc. you can access a whole range of vehicle symbols.
Arrows are also available.

For me and my perceptive abilities when driving ;-) however, this is all a bit too much of a good thing.
I would like to see a simple yet expressive red arrow, without any frills.

The main thing is high-contrast and above all without light/shadow and without any animation.

Simply a red arrow on a transparent background like this (Edit: An arrow without a “tail” is probably better ;-)):

I haven't found one yet and then I gave up trying to find out how to do it myself.

I have for a long time used one cursor that I found on the Swedish BMW Club Forum years ago. I think the signature "HMR" made it. It´s a triangle with blue frame and yellow inside the blue frame. Above al - the front edge on the cursor is exactly were the vehicle are. Not in the center of the icon like Garmin-style. I think it has very good visibility in al conditions. It´s a .srf file called "TriBlueYellow.srf". You put it in the "Vehicle"-folder and then it should aper in "settings" - "map-appearance" - "vehicle".
I try to send it in a private messages to you

If I remember right - HMR had a bunch of other vehicle-icons but I cant find the source for the moment. Maybe there were a red on to. Al of them with its edge as the vehicle-position.

Here is a summary of my research (currently based on many findings on the web):

My how-do:
  • Take a reference Garmin Vehicle .srf template
  • Convert this reference Garmin Vehicle .srf template into a .png file.
    For example, with: http://techmods.net/nuvi/
    > srf2png
    > Select a .srf file: [Reference Garmin Vehicle .srf]
    > [Convert it]
  • Use an image editing program to edit or import the converted .png file.
Note that the converted .png file has 2 * 36 symbols, a specified size, and a transparent background. This must be retained and supported by the program.
(Unfortunately, simply drawing a different symbol with Paint, for example, is not enough.)
I used “Inkscape” and its .png import/export function.
(However, I did not choose “Inkscape” out of preference, but because I have absolutely no experience in image editing and “Inkscape” simply caught my eye by chance.)
You save or export “your work” as a .png file.
Note: at least the transparency and size of the source template must (should) be retained.
  • Convert your work from .png back to an .srf file
    e.g. with: http://techmods.net/nuvi/
    > png2srf
    > Select a .png file: [my Vehicle .png]
    > [Convert it]
  • Last but not least, copy your converted .srv file to the designated device vehicle folder on your Garmin.

PS
Question about conversion tools.
There are certainly many image editing programs to choose from.
But does anyone know of an alternative to http://techmods.net/nuvi/?
Not that techmods.net/nuvi is bad, it does a good job, but if you have another "ace up your sleeve", it certainly can't hurt.

So, now I know how to create my own arrows for a Garmin zumo XT or XT2 and I already have my template. :-)

Unfortunately, I don't have a zumo XT2 to test it on right now :-(
So here's my request: can someone test “my” arrow?
As a “gift,” I can also provide your color preference.
If so, please send me a quick PM.

My current version provides arrows that can also have a border ;-)
Another good thing is that the arrow is no longer completely over the position, but only the arrowhead points to the position (at least in theory).
