Preparing a new route using previous routes

Post by Mikey »

Hello forum friends,
When preparing a new route, sometimes I modify a previously prepared route/s by extending, shortening, joining them etc. I have tried to do so using the associated maps, but this can become rather messy (for me) or the map shows part of a route I don’t want. It is then that I usually abandon the map and go to work on the route dialogue box.

I wonder if BC users have a preferred approach on this, or do they simply start a new route afresh?
Thank you, Mikey

In Basecamp I duplicate the route, as then I know if it's worked before the placement of waypoints etc is ok. Then I can insert / add / remove points to get the rev 2 of the route, and it leaves the rev 1 as the original, which could then be copied again to start the changes again. I do try to add a suffix to the rev 2 / 3 etc so that I can understand why there 's been a change rather than relying on the "1" / "2" etc that Basecamp adds to the duplicated route.

I tend to only do route planning as a current position to home / another waypoint that is already in the unit.

I don't understand what this means. I do the same as @Oop North John , duplicating the route, moving it to a new list, and then modifying is as desired. I have never tried joining two routes. I have always just modified one, extending it so that it follows the route of one I would have joined. It has been awhile since I have done this but I think I duplicated the track of the route I wanted to join then moved it to the new list so that I could easily display it on the map to use as a guide. Any waypoints I wanted from that route would get duplicated and moved to the new list individually.

I agree with the two replies already posted. However, if for some reason your case is different and their (and my) methods don't work, a clumsy but sometimes useful workaround is to create a track from the route you want to use as the basis for the new one, then trace over it with the route tool, creating a brand new route that can follow the old or not as you see fit.

Thank you Oop North John and others. My question generally asks if when adapting (borrowing) an existing BC route to make a new and different route, do XT’ers work on the duplicated trip route dialogue box (route points list) or manipulate the duplicated route map?

My mapping skills are not 100%. Just when I am becoming reasonably competent other life priorities take me away for a while, my grip on the BC learning curve then loosens and backwards I slide…

Thank you for helping.
Mikey.

Both. You can use the route points list to add, remove, and change the order of route points but to add one you must first create it on the map.
The methods of shaping a route (the Insert tool or Alt>Drag) can only be done on the map.

I like the suggestion by @danham about tracing tracks. I have used it often. I find the use of route points in multiple routes frustrating. You must duplicate the points, otherwise a change (move or delete) in one route will affect all routes that route point is in. When duplicated, the route point names get suffixed with a number which bugs me. I am more comfortable creating a new route from scratch using the old routes as guides.
