New MacBook Air - How to Transfer Data
I had to purchase a new MacBook Air. I still have the old one but the screen is "bad" and I have to use an external monitor to use the device.
I want to transfer data from my old compute to my new one. I have installed Basecamp and will install the other needed Garmin software products but, is there an easy way to transfer all the old maps I have stored on my old Laptop computer.
I saw a message about using something from JaVaWa and I did try and use it but it was not obvious on how it needed to be "implemented". So I am looking for an alternative.
I guess I only need the newest maps but I'd like to also keep the older ones I have.
Thanks.

Re: New MacBook Air - How to Transfer Data
So, far the only answer I have found is that if I have my Garmin 595 connected to the computer and I launch Basecamp, I can "use the maps on the GPS" for Basecamp.
Actually the maps are already installed in Basecamp but having the GPS attached apparently authorizes the program's use of the map data.
Not the fix I want but....

You can install them to your Mac using Express, then you won't need to connect your Zumo. JaVaWa's GMTK program would enable you to transfer your maps but it doesn't work with later versions of the Mac

You can go to your user's Library folder on the old Mac using the Go command with the Option key pressed. In it you will find Application support and in that is a Garmin folder which contains Maps. Copy the Maps folder to the same location on your new Mac.

Re: New MacBook Air - How to Transfer Data
Just a follow up on my question and the response above. I don't remember if it was before or after I read the response quoted above but here is what I did.sussamb wrote: Thu Jun 26, 2025 8:27 pm You can install them to your Mac using Express, then you won't need to connect your Zumo. I had my 595 connected to my MacBook and had Garmin Expreess launched. I did what I usually do and that is I download the maps to my computer first. Then when that is finished, I down load the maps to the device. I was pretty confidant that is what I did before I wrote the message here. However.......
Given the response above, I did a check today (without the GPS attached). The 2026.20 map was shown on the "Maps" list three times in BaseCamp. But it was shown as locked.
Before, when I first downloaded the new Maps, the Maps (26.20) did show as "active" on Garmin BaseCamp. That was with the GPS attached to the computer and shown connected on the BaseCamp screen.
When I removed the CPS and tried to use Basecamp again, The map (26.20) was shown as locked.
So, today, I tried again. But before I connected the GPS I did check the maps listing in BaseCamp and it showed the 26.20 map as being there three times but "locked". Oh, I launched Garmin Express also.
I connected the Garmin 595 GPS to the computer and once it was recognized by Garmin Express, I asked Garmin Express to transfer the 26.20 mapss to my computer. The program sort of "spun" for.few seconds and that a "red bar" came up on the Expreess screen showing a failure to load. I disconnected the GPS and tried again (also closing both BaseCamp and Garmin Express). I tired it a third time and the same thing happened each time.
So, I was pretty ticked-off but...... I thought I'd do it one more time. Without the GPS connected to the computer, I launched BaseCamp and then checked to see if the 26.20 Map was actually unlocked. It appeared to be.
So, I don't know what I did, or why it was what it was but it appears I now have the 26.20 Maps on my machine and useful for making routes.
If this changes I will update this port.

Re: New MacBook Air - How to Transfer Data
This is why moving the Maps folder, per my post above, tends to avoid these problems because I believe that any unlock codes travel with the folder. Glad your setup seems squared away.
PS: Just checked and the following file lives in that folder: UnlockCodes.ucx

I am soon to replace an 11 year old MacBook Pro (MacOS 11.7 Big Sur) with a current MacBook Pro 16. Your post suggests that the directory structure in the current MacOS environment remains the same as in the "old days". Is this correct?danham wrote: Sun Jun 29, 2025 3:44 pm You can go to your user's Library folder on the old Mac using the Go command with the Option key pressed. I've been using a scheme in the last year or so where I move my Garmin environment back and forth from the MacBook Pro to a similar aged MacBook Air by transferring a copy of Macintosh HD/Users/user name/Library/Application Support/Garmin/BaseCamp/Database/4.8/everything in there.
Seems to work fine. Hopefully would work to set up a new Mac. My transfer method is to make a copy of the current environment up to my iCloud and then copy that down to the other machine.

Re: New MacBook Air - How to Transfer Data
Bill,
Sorry, but I can't confirm. I'm on a 2017 iMac running Ventura 13.7.6 so can't speak for new Apple silicon models. Anecdotally, the new ones seem to run BC without problems, which says that the directory structure pretty much has to be the same or BC would not run at all.
But I can't verify that from personal experience.
