This morning I posted 2 sequences of info about how to create CustomPOIs and How to use POIs in making a 'TourGuide'.

I remember playing around with these when I got my first Zumo a 550 in 2010 I think. The instructions from Garmin - which are not very clear - have remained the same since. I'd be surprised if they have changed them.

My fault, you are right. With the GPS position simulated all the POIs appear. What have confused me is that the official garmin POI are visible even when you open the map to add a destination. Custom POI appear only during the navigation.

Anyway thanks for the info :D

I am still not sure about the last sentence. Generally when using the map in hand, POIs do not appear - immediately, but their visibility seems to depend on map scale, proximity and a time delay - like other map components, they seem to be drawn in layers. But I have noted certain map views when they do not appear.

Yesterday I was out for a ride and had forgotten all about my testing of POIs and had left them on the XT. i happened to be in the road that I had used and it cam as quite a surprise to hear my own voice in my ears saying 'Point One'. The photo popped up on the screen, and the map showed all the icons as they came within range. I wasn't navigating a route at the time - I just had a track drawn, and these were tour guide POIs. I had noted previously in simulation that the alert repeated while I was in the proximity circle. That didn't happen when actually riding. I'll go out and test POIs in case the non alerting of points not on the route is something that happens only in simulation.

DId you ever find out how to do this @Amelion

I have just installed some Custom POIs on my XT2.
I cannot get them to show up on the screen. I can search for them using Where to->Categories->Custom POIs

I have 3 different GPI files. "Tour Guide Demo", "POI Test 1" and "POI Test 2"

Within these the individual POIs are listed and I can click the (i) information button.

For the Tour guide, I created individual POIs each with their own picture, their own sound clip, a different perimeter, and a different icon.

For the other two files I simply created different POIs each with the same icon, the same perimeter and no custom sound clip (they use the system ping).

V6.10 system software does not show the custom icon associated with the Custom POI. Not when running a route, not when viewing the POI detail information screen when selecting the POI in Where To->Categories->Custom POIs

v5.40 system software (I rolled my XT2 back to an earlier version to check). The (i) button for each POI is shown on the screen. The custom icon appears before the perimeter is reached - when simulating a route - it seems to be about a mile ahead - but I suspect that it is when it comes into view on the map. Thats what I reported that the XT1 does with the same POI files - here: https://www.zumouserforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=2827

The XT2 does more or less the same when system software v5.40 is installed. I just rolled the software back - I expected it to go to v6.0, but it went to 5.40 ! Anyway - version 5.40 behaves more or less the way that I described in the above link - when I check 'Does it Work'

But I cannot get them to show with new software v 6.10

Strictly speaking, it is the system software, rather than firmware. Similar to a Windows operating system.
Firmware is normally what is provided with chips on the circuit board

eg Bluetooth Firmware v2.45.00
eg GPS firmware v1076.1043

Taken from the 'Device' option in the XT2 menu.

When I rolled back the software, it rolled back to v5.40, although my previous version was v6.00. So I have no way of going back to V 6.00
But having tested the behaviour with v5.40, I then used Express to re-install v6.10

I think that v 6.00 introduced the software for the handlebar controller. If so, and you have that device fitted, rolling back to v5.40 will render the controller useless ! But you can always use Garmin Express to update it to v6.10 again.

Make sure that the XT2 is charged. The same procedure works for the XT1

To access the pre-boot menu:

I have performed this operation many times on the XT1 and XT2 without issue, but I have to say that you do this at your own risk.

Turn the XT2 off. Completely off. ie hold down the power button 5 secs and select the Power Off option

Find a room without bright daylight and you may need a magnifying glass. The reason will become obvious - particularly with the XT1
Hold in the power button until the large white 'Garmin' logo appears. ( 4-5 seconds ish.)
Release the power button and immediately click it again.

Immediately, a very dim menu will appear. (If it doesn't, then you did something wrong. Go back to the top and start again)

To navigate the menu, you need to click the power button. (Press and release.)
The selected row will be indicated with an arrow. The options are A01 to A04.
If you click on A04, the arrow cycles back to A01.

To roll back the system software

-->A03 says : Recover from software failure. Long press the power button to select that.

The menu now changes - B01 to B04.
Cycle round using power button clicks.

-->B03 Roll back system software is the one that you want.

If you are sure, long press on that and release the button once it starts. I don't think you can interrupt this, but do not try.
Once it has started, you have to let it complete. The Zumo will boot up normally with a previous version of the software.

To exit the pre boot menu without doing anything, then don't click the power button for 30 secs, the Zumo will boot normally.

Thank you very much, it worked like a charm (back to 5.40) . No handlebar controller needed, I need only the Poi to work ;)
Any idea on where to find the software V6.0 ?

No. I think that you can copy it from the system folder when you have v6.0 installed and then I think that you can put it on an SD card and use the same pre-boot menu to install it.

I tried it with an earlier Zumo, but my file had '.updated.xxxxx' after it (or something like that) and it didn't work.

I never tried again. What I 'know' about it for the XT1 is documented here. But I use 'know' as a word which is closer to the ignorance end of the scale. Its info gleaned from elsewhere from which I tried to make some sense. There's always a clue in how much to trust such expert knowledge, when the author doesn't use the correct terminology !

The other method is discussed in this post, to which I contributed a lot, but never tried by me with the XTs
