Furkot: My 1st experience

Post by Peobody »

Someone on this forum mentioned Furkot, creating routes in it, exporting them, and then using the using the exported .gpx file in a device. This intrigued me so I gave it a try, creating a test route without signing up. The test route included a start, end and two interim route points for shaping purposes. I exported it using the GPS exchange file (.gpx) option. I imported that export into Basecamp to see what was produced. The interim points were via points. I went back to Furkot to see if I could find a way to create route points as shaping points and could not. Did I miss anything?

It has been several years since I used Furkot, so my memory of methods may have faded. It can be a bit too powerful and detailed for my usual day rides, but if I ever again plan a multi-day tour I will probably subscribe again.

IIRC, placing a new point will create a via point, with a flag. If you click and drag a route to a new location, it sets a "pass-through" point (shaping point), marked with a circle. You can change the type of point by opening it in the PLAN "drawer" and modifying the Duration of the stop. Zero duration indicates a pass-through, any length of time makes it a stop. If you do not see these shaping points in the list, click the filter funnel on the upper right and click the circle with a diagonal line to show them.

Figuring out the unusual Furkot interface, and knowing where to look for something, can be frustrating. Fortunately, Furkot has excellent Help files, well worth a read just to get an idea of the many options and possibilities. Sometimes Google, including Furkot with a search term, will produce a more concise answer to your questions.

Remember, Furkot uses different maps (OSM, i think) than City Navigator. You'll want to put a matching map on your Garmin if you export and use a Furkot route.
