New Battery for ZUMO ZT

Post by Redlodge52 »

Hello, I am looking for a replacement battery for my XT. Ideally a UK provider. The battery number is 361-00133-00. I cannot find one anywhere? Has anyone else replaced theirs?

Not from the uk (sorry, i'm from austria) - but google showed my at least two resources:
Akkuplus.de https://akkuplus.de/Akkureparatur-Zelle ... olt-Li-Ion changes the battery for € 47,- and akkusmarkt.de https://www.akkusmarkt.de/garmin-akku-3 ... 778920.htm sells one for € 21,-
Bye, Robert :)

Many thanks for your help. Both the links show as having no stock. I do seem to be able to order one from Akkuplus but delivery is 3 months! Plus the battery cost, shipping and tax make it very expensive.

I just wonder why there is this issue with finding a replacement with the XT? I cannot be the only person with this issue. The unit is only 4 years old.

Redlodge52, I can't speak with any actual facts, however.... my gut tells me "planned obsolescence".
If you think about how fast the XT2 came to the market after the XT, leads me to think that Garmin wants the XT gone. To accomplish that they just simply make it cost prohibitive to repair it.
With the XT out of the "way" or at an early EOL, Garmin will have an easier time of getting rid of Basecamp, and making everything web/cloud based.

Maybe I'm totally off base here, but that's just my thoughts.

I ordered battery from AliExpress, OrangeYu 1800mAh Battery 361-00059-00 for Garmin ZUMO 350LM,ZUMO 390LM, ZUMO 340LM. It’s bit smaller for mAh and size but the connector is same. I just clued it in the old battery attachment plastic, unit works again now and it was only 10€

OrangeYu 1800mAh Battery 361-00059-00 for Garmin ZUMO 350LM,ZUMO 390LM, ZUMO 340LM, is available but my first attempt at buying it showed the vendor offering a cheaper version that was "not deliverable to my address". I kept looking at the same vendor and they offered a 15% more costly version that was deliverable. Huh... Still less than $20 delivered from China.

I bought one and Thank You Very Much for the tip here about the connector being the same as the OEM unobtanium battery.

There is a thread from 2023 that indicates one user had a "bricking" event when attempting to change out his working, older battery to a new battery. He "left it disconnected overnight", and then plugged in the new battery and the unit would not boot up. He did not report back about whether or not he fixed it. This is a report of one event, I find no other similar reports.

So, I glean from that report, that there is some risk attempting to change out the battery. Certainly others have successfully changed to a new battery?

Edit 22July:

I received the battery very quickly, looked like from a depot in Hayward CA. I then proceeded to measure the voltage across the red and black wires. The battery appears completely flat, dead. I tried via "whisker" wires into the connector mouth, from the top. One strand of copper "hair", this is a 1.0mm pitch connector, very tiny openings. No voltage, so I try again by needle probing via the connector front where the crimps are seen. Still nothing. I'm sending it back.

This is a 3 wire battery system with a BMS built into the battery. I do not know what the third green wire is for, but other retailers mention a thermistor sensor. So, maybe it's for that I dont know. I'm hoping it does not affect the open circuit voltage for testing.

One other point I took on faith, but I have not confirmed. The connector is polarized, so that it will insert in only one way. I dont know if this new battery is wired to be the same polarity as the original battery (positive to positive, red to red). It cortainly matters to successfully connect and power the GPS. Bing a DOA battery, I did not open the Zumo to check this detail. Other vendors on eBay (and maybe Amazon), allow one to order the battery wired in a specific polarity. That is, you can order a battery: Pin 1 to Black (negative), or Pin 1 to Red (positive). T I tried to determine which way this connector was wired, but I could not find a pin 1 marking (as identified on this JTCT connector spec). I took a bunch of pictures and measurements, but I do not find any successful references here or elsewhere online.

I will punt, and try again if I can get clarification on these points.

Based on physical dimension measurements of the OEM Garmin 361- 00133-00 battery 63 x 43 x 10 mm, and the electrical characteristics of 3.7 VDC, 3060 mAh, 11.3 Wh, 3 wire external connections. I obtained all of this from the battery in my Zumo XT.

Based on that data, I believe this is a good to excellent replacement and readily available in a bunch of places:

P/N LIP1708 ASIN# B0BXWNFG31

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0BXWNFG31

3.7 V, 3000 mAh, 60x37x9, 3A draw, 3 wire.

...for Sony PS5 CFI-ZCT1.

This one presents a 3 wire interface, but it has no connector attached. You will cut the OEM battery connector off, solder it onto the new battery and re-use it.

Notice the 3A draw current. There were some other physically smaller batteries with a correct connector and correctly wired for polarity, but I did not like the small capacity or the lower max current draw. Like the previously suggested 361-00059-00.

Consider that fact carefully if you plan on riding into cold weather.

However, if you can live with that or don't like the soldering job, I can confirm that battery does have the correct connector and correctly wired polarity. Those aspects match the OEM battery.

There's still the question of how long can one leave the battery disconnected before the unit no longer boots up? I don't know. This idea alone may be worth buying a battery with a proper connector , properly polarized, and attached. A quick swap to a non dead battery is likely better than a long-ish disconnect and connector swap. I dont know the connector spec part number. Frankly, I no longer have the patience to sort it out.

I hope this helps someone. Good Luck.
