POI's in Tread - How to make them visible

Post by Oop North John »

Tried the options that I see in Tread and none of them seems to show the POI's that the mapping the XT2 will have on it, and which can also be seen in Basecamp. I can send them to Tread after looking in Basecamp but I thought that Tread is meant to be standalone.

So, anyone know how to make the POI's visible, so if I'm constructing a route in Tread then I can use a POI as a way / shaping point rather than its usual choice of a road?

You might get answers which are talking at Cross Purposes here.

"way / shaping point". these are not two alternatives.

A point on a route is either a shaping or a via point. Either may have been created as a Waypoint.

Waypoints are pre saved locations that may be used as part of a route (when they are treated as either vias or shaping points). They contain additional info such as address, postcode, elevation, phone number.

A POI point of interest is not a point in a route. It is a stand alone location which is plotted on a map with

a custom symobol
an image
a sound clip. mp3
a 'perimeter'
Some text.

When riding, if you enter the perimeter of a POI, then the picture and text are displayed on the Zumo screen, and the sound clip is played.

The above are all Garmin's uses of the terms.

-------

MyRouteApp treats things differently.

To MRA, a waypoint is any point in a route - it can be either a via point or a shaping point. It is just a term for a route point.

MRA. uses the term POI in a similar way to Garmin's Waypoints - ie presaved locations, that you may include in a route - but in MRA, although you can create your own POI's, you cannot add them to your route !

--------

The. XT2 treats Garmin's waypoints slightly differently from other Zumos. The XT for example, if you use a Waypoint in your route and set it as a shaping point - that shaping point stayed in exactly the same location as the Waypoint. Ditto if you set the waypoint as a Via Point in the route.

The XT2 seems to regard all shaping points as moveable. To a lesser extent, the Via Points are often moved slightly. If those points were first created as a Waypoint and saved, the XT2 will separate the route point from the Waypoint - in other words, the route may not pass through the Waypoint. There is nothing wrong with that - but it is new behaviour for the Zumos.

----

So I am unclear as to what your question is asking !

I'm wanting to see POI's in Tread that you can certainly see / find if you were browsing the map in the XT2 / Basecamp.

For example:

The POIs that are on the right hand side search menu in Basecamp show up on the BC map if the approprate level of details is shown.

They are not included in any GPX file that is sent to the Zumo unless you select one and make it into a waypoint.

Apparently - accoridng to the on-line Basecamp manual, if you have created POIs and sent them to the Zumo using (say)POI loader, then Basecamp can read those Points of Interest and plot them on the map.

I have read on these forum pages, that people have used BC to create such points of interest. My offering regarding such things are in this link here.

It is worth noting that although BC puts the heading Point of Interest at the top of the right hand column after intitiating a search, I don't believe that what is presented to be the same as what POI loader creates as Points of Interest.

I have not seen any way of adding the type of POI that I describe (from garmin's documentation) to the Tread App. Not have I found any way of loading tracks into the tread app to enable it to synch. (But I haven't looked particualrly hard).

The XT2 has its own POI database. the Trip Advisor database, the Michelin Green Guide - which allow you to search a particular location and display them on a map on the Zumo screen. There are also categories - which allow you to search for similar things - but the link simply takes you to the Garmin Explore download page.

In Settings->Map Display->Map Layers->Up Ahead places You can select a number of different categories that show on the map ahead, and can also be displayed in a small window in the right hand side of the screen. (I have my own categories in there which are searches for XXX yyy ZZZ - because most of the time, I don't want them cluttering up the display - but I do want my waypoints to be displayed. That isn't an option, but waypoints only show if Up ahead places is turned on. edited - it seems that was true for the XT1, not true for the XT2 On the map display, you have to select the 3 bar menu and choose -"Up ahead" You can then select one of these to obtain an animated list - showing a direction arrow and a distance. List is ordered - nearest first. The map button shows a map with all of the nearby locations plotted. You can zoom in on the map and delect one of the points and details are shown at the bottom of the screen. Tap that button at the bottom and a new page opens with a detaial map, and POI details. (with price info if it is a petrol station).

If you are just referring to waypoints - with an icon saved in the XT2 - they will appear on the map, but - (it is a while since I checked this out) - the map layers->up ahead places needs to be ticked - which is why I use the xxx yyy zzz searches - because I want to see the waypoint symbol but not every petrol station, cashpoint machine and restaurant. in the vicinity - they clutter up the map.

Oh - the XT2 has an option to trim out display of waypoints to stop it them cluttering the map at certain zoom levels. I've not tried it out yet.

I've probably missed some stuff - but something in there might be what you want. I'll see if I can get a screen shot of some snippets showing icons and add it to this post.

Screen shots of a quick test.

I had a number of waypoints saved from a recent tour. These were created in Basecamp. I altered them to have some different images associated with them. All done in BAsecamp and exported to the XT2 as a GPX file.

Waypoint showed up on the XT2 screen whether or not up ahead places was ticked (so that is different from the early XT1).

The icons were identical to the ones that I selected in Basecamp - in the waypoint property dialogue box.

I then enabled Tread to synch with my older phone.

The waypoints synced immediately and showed up on the map as the same icons that I chose in Basecamp.

But these are waypoints - not the POIs that requires POI loader to get them into the Zumo.

Tripmanager can create POI's from waypoints and transfer them to a Zumo

Ignore Basecamp / MRA etc etc, imagine you don't have an XT2 or any other Garmin product.

You download Tread and only Tread and you have no other apps / Google etc on your device.

How do you then see the nearest fuel station / shop / hotel to a place that you have showing with Tread open, without searching for a name?

There is a search option which you can use to find locations - either when the route is in edit mode, or without a route present. It is a magnifying glass on the top right of my ipad Tread screen. I've just tried this with Tread removed from my phones. It seemed to be using the TripAdviser database - but that may be coincidence that the searches I tried found them in TripAdvisor.

That allows you to save the found location as a waypoint and to change the icon and add notes.

Waypoints can be put into collections and collections can be visible or invisible.

Routes can be built using saved Waypoints using the same search button - which is a rapid way of building a route.
