CN EU NTU 2026.20 not on PC

Post by Snijderj »

When I plugged my XT into my PC an opened Garmin Express it said that there were map updates. I still run V7.23 because in the latest version 7.24 I could no longer install the map onto my PC and I had to always plug in the XT to use the latest map in Basecamp - which is a nuisance. V7.23 did allow that so I downgraded to that and all was well.

However, something has changed again. I still use Express V7.23 and I updated the map to 2026.20. Unfortunately, this does now once again not load the map onto the PC. If I use Basecamp without the XT plugged in, all I can select in 2026.10. Only when I plug in the XT does 2026.20 show up in Basecamp.

I thought staying with Express V7.23 would prevent this issue, but apparently no longer.

I guess all this has to do with trying to prevent pirating the maps, but it is a right PITA. Every time I plug in the XT if takes a very long time for the PC to recognise it. I can't switch on the XT to see a map or a route when it is plugged in, so every time I want to check if a route is right or wrong on the XT I need to unplug it. Then, if I want to make changes in BC I have to plug it in again, and wait a long time for it to be recognised.

All this is really very annoying, and a definite QoL downgrade. Is there any way around this?

Updating the GPS map and installing that map on your PC are separate operations, and it is not clear that you completed the second step.

Plug in the XT and run Express, let it check for updates and then click "Map Details". On that page, under the City Navigator version, select "Options". That should offer the option to "Install to Computer". (I still have that option in Express 7.25)

Also, instead of unplugging the GPS to view routes on the GPS, you can just hold down the power button until it reboots. It is still a right PIA, but a tiny bit quicker and saves some wear on the USB ports.

@lkraus, Thank you for this tip. I'm glad to hear of an alternative to the unplug, plug-back-in dance.

You can check if the map is on your PC by running JaVaWa's GMTK program, it sounds like it isn't. Also provided BaseCamp has indexed the map on your XT BaseCamp shouldn't take long to display it. The time taken for your PC to recognise a device is a PC and not a BaseCamp issue.

Thank you, this does the trick. Also thanks for the reboot tip, I will use that in the future.

I guess I just don't understand why my PC takes literally 10 - 20 times as long to recognise the XT as it does with other external devices, such as USB sticks and external HDD's. Is there anything I can do to speed this up?

Not that I know of. Also, the connection time of my XT varies significantly. I always click "Continue" to bypass the countdown so I know that is not contributing to the connection time.

Possibly. If you have your device set to record/save trip logs I've found that clearing those logs speeds up connection time.

Thanks. I just tried that. I unticked Travel History and deleted all saved tracks and other stuff.
It has made no difference, it still took over 30 seconds for the XT to show up in Basecamp.
Very annoying.
