XT2 power mount failure?

Post by MTNFSH »

My XT2 powered mount stopped working today and not sure why. My setup has been working reliably for the past couple of years. I have the powered mount taking power off the auxiliary power supply for my Triumph Tiger 1200 under the rear pillion seat - tested power to auxiliary plug and it works. The 3 amp fuse appears to be fine - no discoloration or signs of damage. The ZT2 mount prongs show a reduced power level that seems consistent with the 3 amp fuse setup but unsure on this point The XT2 powers up when plugged into the USB-C cable inside the house but won't power up when secured into the powered mount. Still the XT2 doesn't power up when plugged in the mount. Anyone else have this problem with a set up going bad that had been working fine?

I had that same exact problem. I found one of the pin contacts on the back of the Garmin had plastic (case)on the pin contact from possible overheating. I cleaned the contact off and it still would not power on when connected to the base. I contacted Garmin and told me to send it in, and they would send me a refurbished unit in return. I was using an XT mount with the 5v power adapter removed, so the unit was getting 12V on the power pins but I realized that the XT2 power cable and mount is different than the XT so it might have overheated for that reason. It worked normally for quite some time before it failed.

Have you checked the source of the power ? If you used the ring terminal supplies with the XT2, then make sure that it is clamped firmly on the battery. Make sure that the power lead is properly crimped and connecting to the wire.
Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

It appears the connectors between the XT2 and the Garmin mount may have been dirty or simply not making proper contact. I popped it back on the next day and it powered on and off with the main bike power as it had before. I found on another forum that someone else had a similar issue with dirty / dusty connections.

My wiring does not go directly to the battery. I use an alternative power setup I found on youtube two year ago that ties the Garmin power cord with waterproof connectors to my 2023 Tiger 1200 auxiliary power unit under the rear seat. I don't need that auxiliary power point, so I unplugged the Tiger power relay under the seat and am powering the Garmin off the relay which is live when the bike's power is on.
