Where to connect 396 to 12v

Post by twowheelstom »

I received my new 396 today that replaces the 550. I'm now trying to decide where to connect to 12v power on the bike.
Does the 396 red power cord wire need an in-line fuse holder?

The install sheet in the box shows the motorcycle wire harness with a 12 to 24 volt converter box and an inline fuse on the red wire. I have mine connected to an SAE pigtail that has an inline fuse built in. Can't remember doing it, but there's an inline fuse cut off of a wire harness sitting on a shelf. I probably cut it off from the Garmin harness to avoid two fuses on the same wire. Does your harness have one?

in the box is the power wire harness cord and half way down the cord is attached a small black box Garmin P/N 320-00322-73 says Input: 10 - 30V max 1.5A, Output 4.8 - 5.5V 1.5A . On the Installation Instructions sheet it shows 12 to 24Vdc system power (red) with in-line fuse. There's no in-line fuse on this cord. After some internet researching, Garmin has a part number 010-11483-01 for older cable and a newer cable part number 010-11843-04
I wounder if this cable I have is the newer cable with no in-line fuse holder. Maybe Garmin changed the need for a fuse holder on my cable, not sure.

Since that box doesn't open up for fuse replacements, it's not that much of a job to add a fuse. This is if you're connecting directly to the battery. As I said in the prior post, I connected my 396 and a 450 to SAE pigtails that have fuses. I have a 590 that I put a BMW/DIN plug on the harness end, and just plug that Zumo into the BMW accessory power outlet which is fused.

here's my 396 Instruction Sheet, it shows an in-line fuse on the cord but this cord in my hands has no such thing, and no fuse holder in the box either, I am suspicious now what Garmin has done to this cord, I wonder if this black box on the power cord already includes the in-line fuse inside it. because to my thinking Garmin would have included a fuse holder in the box if one was needed, that's what I'm thinking now. If i am right then Garmin needs to print new Instruction Sheets.

found it, seems that Garmin has made a change to the power cord needing an in-line fuse holder on the 396.
