A couple of cons for the saving the active route on the XT are:

1) Definite - If you're not at the start of the route, and the XT knows where it is, then the starting point becomes your present location. Will mess up the distance / time to travel, but that sorts itself out once you start where the route should be starting from IYSWIM.

2) Probable - Faster roads rather than fastest route, will be mitigated by sensible use of via / waypoints.

To overcome that you could: Enable the GPS Simulator. Set your location to where you want it. Start the route and then save the active route.
I agree that it's not something you like to do for a lot of trips. Still hoping for a Garmin solution...

I'm confused. Are you saying that modifying the .trip file breaks the ability to select the entry point of a route?

I don't believe that fixing trips by any of these methods does anything more that prevent the RUT issue. All other aggravations associated with recalcs remain.

Just used the online JavaWa tool and it works very well. On a Mac you do need to use Android File Transfer to be able to copy the Imported trip to your computer, then run the online tool, then drag the modified trip file back to your XT. Be sure to delete the unmodified file in the XT or Trip Planner will get confused by two versions with the same TRIP name, even if you modify the trip's file name when you save it. In other words, if the original trip is called HOME to Highway 81, when imported, the XT saves it as something like 1076539875.trip Even if you change that file name, it is still internally coded as HOME to Highway 81, so the original should be deleted before copying the modified file back to the XT. Also, if the modified trip fails to show up in the Saved window, power cycle (reboot) the XT and it should be there.

I know there are a number of threads on the RUT topic. Is there a sense of how this method fixes the problem? I've taken to being answering no to the recalculation prompt but it would be nice to go back to trusting that recalculation.

The RUT problem is triggered by a recalculation but it is a different issue from recalculation results that modify pre-planned routes and produce illogical ones. We are still fighting that battle (eg: avoiding recalculation as much as possible).
