You shouldn't need too, Express should ask you to insert a card if one is needed. If it doesn't then please confirm that so we can advise further.

I put in a new 32gig SD card. With the Zumo connected to the PC, via Garmin express, it shows the amount of internal storage left. It shows the SD card and it's full available space. But when I try updating the maps it stops with the error message of internal storage being inadequate

Does the 550 accept cards that big ? Let me see if I can find out ....

No. Not according to this page. Scroll down and find the link to the Zumo info.

https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=U ... memorycard

It says that the maximum card size for the 550 is 4Gb. The software update log doesn't indicate that it was ever increased.

Correction. Version 3 software update. :
Added support for SDHC cards and increased MP3 playlist limit to 1000 songs.

No size limit given
Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

Forgot that the 550 wont allow Express to access the memory card. To update the map see https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=b ... memorycard

Instead of transferring files from the internal memory to an SD card, you may want to simply install the maps to the SD card. That's what I've been doing.

I use a 32Gb SD card in my 550, and have loaded the maps to the SD card, not the internal memory.
The new maps available are too large for the internal memory for a complete install.
I've got 2023.1 installed on my SD card and it's 3.3Gb in size.

I had a similar issue with my Zumo 660 (not recognizing SD card) I used 'Mapinstall' and it worked a treat.
