550 Screen Problem

Post by kernowing »

I have an old(ish) 550 to which I fitted a new screen/digitizer. It worked OK for a while then it wouldn't react to touch screen instructions. I've tried to re-calibrate but when it opens the process the dot appears top centre but doesn't move when touched. The screen/digitizer was a Chinese jobbie from Ebay a couple of years ago (when I bought the Z660)

Would you be open to sending it off for repair?

As I only kept it as a "stand by", I'm not sure that it woud be cost effective to repair. The maps are quite old and I let someone have the bike mount.
I can move between screens by using the button on the left.
I may have a look at doing a reset to see if that has any effect.

You could open it up and unplug/replug the digitizer to give it a shiny, new connection.

Yup, did that earlier Dave. The screen went white with no image. Took the digitizer off again, cleaned the contacts, re-connected it again and it worked fine for a couple of minutes, then back to not working! Odd thing is, when you touch the screen icon it does change colour but doesn't go to next screen, maybe suggesting that it's getting the signal from the touch screen but not acting on it?? (if that makes sense)

I have my 550 repaired (degraded buttons and replaced the internal battery) by https://www.palmdr.com. The cost was about $50 as I remember it. Don't know what shipping would be for you but someone just posted a thread where they had their 660 repaired for approx $120 (did not look it up but its here on the board).

I still use my 550 but it did have lifetime maps. I also have a couple of bike mounts for my 550 that I no longer use.

I posted this back in July, when someone else asked about repairs.

My 550 has traveled all over the world with me and Chris Short (Palm doctor) has taken EXELLENT care of it and my motorcycle mount as well. I don't think I will EVER replace it as long as Chris stays in business.

Rick, I had considered Palm Doctor but with me being in the UK it would probably not be cost effective. Also if I did get it repaired, I would still need to update the maps. It would end up costing nearly as much as a replacement unit. :(
