Hi, I was the chap with self destructing SD holder! :D My opinion is: If you can afford the 595, go for it. Welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy your GPS.
I concur it is better to use a computer when updating - if for no other reason, power. If the battery fails while performing an update - you are totally stuffed.

Just thought I would add my 2p worth. I just discovered the thread.
I used to work in a Finance department until a year ago, then I moved to Sales Steering for a Container Firm. (The firms with very large ships, with lots of Containers on board.)
Stressful, but very rewarding.
