Not sure if this still applies, but you can also uninstall old map versions, the old maps appear as installed programs (or apps as they like to call them now) to save quite a large chunk of HD.

I find it's easier to do the initial planning on MyRoute using Google maps, and Streetview, then export, open in BC and check it's all on the right roads (it usually needs a tweak or two) before sending to the Zumo. The EU map has been split for a while, as it had exceeded the FAT32 4Gb limit. The fact the Install to pc was a separate option will be because you didn't have the full EU mapset installed on your device, as to why you can't now install it to your pc I don't know.
