Re: Which GPS To Buy Now
Bottom line, 590 or 396. I have a XT, 396 and 595 One issue with the 396 is that like the XT is the "fastest" routing option means faster roads, but it does use imported routes correctly. The 396 does have a much brighter screen than the 590 /595. The 396 is almost a halfway house between...

Re: Which GPS To Buy Now
A second-hand Zumo 590 or 595 would probably work for you as it still has the possibility of wired audio along with BT. They're an evolution and shouldn't take much extra learning. I don't know if they work with Mapsource, so that might be a negative, I suspect they don't as when I got one I had to ...

A USB charger like this is useful to see what power is being supplied by it, especially to see what a Garmin GPS is doing:

Re: My new (2nd hand) 590.
I don't know if it would provide any additional information, but it doesn't help not having that tool visible. I can't remember how to show it. A right click on a blank part of the menu bar perhaps ? Im not at my PC at present to check. Top line select - "View" select - "Toolbars&quo...

Re: Dim screen
I've changed the map themes, which helps, and turning off the 3D map layers can also assist in making things more visible. And, zooming out past 3 miles dramatically increases the background grey darkness, and that doesn't seem to be adjustable in the themes.

Re: Standard battery for Zumo 396.
Why not just have a power bank with a USB lead to power the 396?
On most modern Garmin's pressing on the battery icon for about 10 seconds brings up a diagnostics page with the battery and charging information.

Re: Wacko traffic auto-recalc routing
I just received an email response from Garmin cartography. I was thanked for submitting this issue and told that it would be escalated to engineering. The optimist in me will take that as an indication that they have not given up on the XT. And the pessimist looks at what 6.60 did for the XT :(

Re: New firmware 6.60 for Zumo XT
Initial limited testing makes me think that the Repeated u-turns and faster roads difficulties haven't been fixed in 6.60

6.60 - no mention of routing algorithms, n=but maybe they're too embarrassed by what they inflicted on us!

So the XT's purpose in life, to navigate, sensibly and logically, it can't do
