In general, the best way to keep Garmins following your route is to set the navigation mode to shortest distance and use lots of shaping points and/or via points

I have not been able to find a way to have the 396LMT-S reverse a route. It is easy to do with either BC or Mapsource, but I have not been able to find a way in the unit itself.
