Ok so I killed the process after 2 hours of nothing happening. I completely turned off the XT, waited a while and the restarted it. It works fine.

Then I reconnected it to the PC and opened Garmin Explorer. This time it does offer me the map updates and it says nothing about updating the XT itself ...

What Peobody said. But regarding switching off route recalc - if it spots a road closure, you don;t get the choice. Off or not - it will not naviagte through a closed road.

Sometimes a paper map is a really useful things to have.


They certainly are, but mostly for use at home. I do tend to take a large scale overview map when touring, for instance I took a Michelin map covering France and the Benelux for my recent trip to France and... (wait for it...) the Benelux ...

With the XT1 I find the road closure information to be very 'sketchy'......
