XT2: Section 4 - FoolProof Routing

Put Your Route onto The XT2
Throughout this series of pages I will look at just two methods - both use a USB cable,
  • The usual method is to place the GPX file onto the SD card and let the XT2 prepare the route read for the XT2 to be able to access it.
  • The other method is to use a Utility for the PC called TripManager - which does the work for you and eliminates all sorts of behaviour that many of us do not want.
Use SD Card - eg Transfer via USB Cable
Your GPX file(s) should contain your routes, your tracks and your Waypoints. Organise them as you like - eg:
  • put them all together in one GPX file;
  • have routes in one gpx file, tracks in another, waypoints in another;
  • have one GPX file containing the route, track and waypoints for one day. Use another gpx file for the second day - and so on
Tracks can be created from routes in any program worth using. MRA always prepares one. In Basecamp you create one from the route. Waypoints - beware - MRA's Waypoints are not the same things that Garmin and the XT2 use.
Why Use the SD Card
The SD Card offers a number of advantages over using Internal Storage, which I have described here on page 334. (Opens in a new tab or window)

Briefly - the files contents are not messed about with by the Zumo XT2, in the same way that they are if placed in Internal Storage.

You can use any folder on the SD card - The Zumo XT2 will find any GPX file no matter where it is stored. It makes sense to keep the folder short - so that you can use more characters in the filename.

Internal Storage on the XT2 showing various folders - including GPX where all route files may be placed. Current.gpx, CurrentTrackLog.gpx and Position.gpx are all created by the system. The top two contain the Routes, Tracks and Waypoints for a couple of my longer tours.

A view of the contents of the memory card. Note that I have two GPX folders. One inside the Garmin folder (which is the normal location), one which is on the root - just as it is in internal storage. Both locations work well. The image shows the contents of Memory Card/GPX - 4 separate gpx files each with a number of routes, tracks and waypoints.
