XT2: Section 5 - What Goes Wrong
5.02 - Preparing the Tests
Tests 01 to 04
T01 A6 v M6 All Shaping Points.
Think of this as Test 01. All I did was create a start point at the south end of the route and an end point on the M6 at the north end, and then inserted 6 additional points to ensure that the route followed the roads that I wanted. I then named each route point, making sure that each started with a two-digit sequence number. The route is shown on the previous page.
Garmin insists that the start and end points are always Via Points. Via points are usually displayed with an orange flag on the Zumo Screens, and will give spoken, text and map alerts as you approach and arrive. The start and end points are special kinds of Via Points and are usually marked with a green flag and a black/white chequered flag respectively.
I have set points 02 to 07 to "Won't Alert" in Basecamp - which means that they will be Shaping Points when transferred to the Zumo. In MyRouteApp, you would use the Tear Drop Icon for Shaping Points and the Hand Icon for Via Points.
So we have 8 route points. The start and finish points are set as Via points; points 02 to 07 are set as Shaping Points. There are no Waypoints in this route.

T02 - All Via Points
This is a duplicate of route T01 - ie I have used the route points in T01 to create brand new route points with identical coordinates. Each point has been renamed by adding the word 'Via' to the end. (Basecamp has added a digit '1' to the start and end points - it doesn't like to have two separate points with identical names.
The reason for this particular test is that on the XT2 a via point in a location wlill produce different routing from that produced if a shaping point were to be used in the same location. So this test will reveal if any differences arise. So this route has 8 Via Points and there are still no Waypoints in this route.

T03 & T04 - Using Waypoints
These two tests are very similar to Test 01 and 02, in that they test the behaviour of Shaping Points (T03) and Via Points (T04) respectively. This time however I will not use point and click to create 'ad-hoc' route points. Instead I will save the locations as Waypoints.
I created 16 new Waypoints and saved them with their own names - 8 for Test 03 coinciding exactly with the 8 route points in Test 01, and another 8 for Test 04 to coincide exaclty with the same route points used in Test 02. You have to remember that for Garmin, a 'Waypoint' is not a point on a route. It is a location that has been created and saved for future use - perhaps in a route, perhaps just to display on a map.
I created new routes for Test 03 and Test 04 - using the Waypoints that I had created and saved.
So Test 04 has 8 Waypoints, all of which are (also) Via Points.
Test 03 has 8 Waypoints, 6 of which are set as Shaping Points and 2 are set as Via Points.
